Can a Ring Replace a Sleep Lab?
Oura Ring 5 promises clinical-grade sleep tracking from your finger. We compared Oura's data against a polysomnography (PSG) sleep study to find out.
Study Setup
5 participants wore the Oura Ring 5 during an overnight PSG study. PSG measured brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, and heart rhythm — the gold standard for sleep staging.
Sleep Stage Accuracy
- Light sleep: 89% agreement with PSG
- Deep sleep: 82% agreement — slightly overestimates
- REM sleep: 78% agreement — sometimes confuses with light sleep
- Awake periods: 94% agreement — excellent detection
HRV Measurement
Oura's HRV correlated strongly (r=0.91) with ECG-derived HRV during sleep. Nighttime HRV trend is reliable for tracking recovery and stress.
Readiness Score
Oura's readiness score incorporates sleep quality, HRV, temperature, and activity. Correlated well with subjective energy levels (r=0.79). High readiness days consistently matched better workout performance.
Limitations
Cannot detect sleep apnea events or periodic limb movements. If you suspect a sleep disorder, a clinical study remains necessary.
Verdict
Oura Ring 5 delivers the most accurate consumer sleep tracking available. Not a replacement for clinical studies, but reliable enough for actionable daily insights.
