Why GPS Accuracy Matters for Runners
If your fitness tracker says you ran 5.0 miles but you actually ran 4.7, your pace calculations, training load estimates, and race predictions are all wrong. We tested GPS accuracy against a survey-grade Trimble R2 receiver across urban, suburban, and trail routes.
Test Methodology
Each tracker was worn on 25+ runs totaling 200+ miles. Routes included city streets with tall buildings, open parks, wooded trails, and bridges. We compared each device's recorded distance and route against the Trimble reference.
GPS Accuracy Rankings
1. Garmin Forerunner 265 — ±0.8% error
Multi-band GPS delivers the most accurate tracking in every environment. City canyons and tree cover barely affect it.
2. COROS PACE 4 — ±1.2% error
Excellent accuracy at a lower price point. The dual-frequency GPS handles most challenging environments well.
3. Apple Watch Ultra 3 — ±1.5% error
Significantly improved from previous generations. The L1+L5 GPS is reliable in most conditions, though tall buildings still cause occasional drift.
Heart Rate Accuracy
For running-specific heart rate monitoring, chest straps remain the gold standard. Among wrist-based sensors, the Garmin and Apple Watch tied for accuracy (±3 BPM vs. Polar H10 reference). Budget trackers showed ±8-12 BPM error during interval training.
Battery Life for Long Runs
Marathon runners need 8+ hours of GPS tracking. The COROS PACE 4 leads with 38 hours, followed by Garmin at 22 hours. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 manages 12 hours with GPS — adequate for most runners but tight for ultras.
Recommendation
For serious runners: Garmin Forerunner 265. For budget-conscious: COROS PACE 4. For iPhone users who want a smartwatch too: Apple Watch Ultra 3.
