30 Days with the Ultra 3
Apple's Ultra 3 enters a wearable market where the gap between premium and mid-range watches has narrowed significantly. At $799, it needs to deliver meaningfully more than the $399 Series 11 to justify double the price. After wearing it daily for a month — including a week of trail running, two scuba dives, and countless workdays — here is what we found.
Battery Life: Finally a Non-Issue
The Ultra 3 delivers 72 hours of typical use on a single charge, up from 60 hours on the Ultra 2. With the new low-power mode that preserves health tracking while dimming the display, we consistently reached four full days between charges. For multi-day adventures, the new solar charging band (sold separately) added roughly 30 minutes of runtime per hour of direct sunlight — enough to extend a weekend trip indefinitely.
Health Features: Incremental but Useful
The new blood pressure estimation feature requires a two-week calibration period with a traditional cuff, after which it provides trend-level readings (not exact systolic/diastolic numbers). In our testing against a validated Omron cuff, the Ultra 3 correctly identified elevated readings 87% of the time. Sleep apnea detection, introduced last year, continues to work well — it flagged a colleague's previously undiagnosed mild sleep apnea during our testing.
GPS Accuracy: Best in Class
The dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS remains the most accurate wrist-based GPS available. On a 10-mile trail run with dense tree cover, the Ultra 3's track was within 0.3% of the surveyed distance, while the Garmin Fenix 8 was within 0.5% and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 was off by 2.1%.
Is It Worth the Premium?
Over the Series 11, the Ultra 3 offers: 3x battery life, significantly better GPS accuracy, a brighter display (3,000 nits vs 2,000), water resistance to 100m (vs 50m), the Action button, and blood pressure estimation. For most people, the Series 11 at $399 covers 90% of the use cases. The Ultra 3 makes sense if you are an endurance athlete, diver, or outdoor enthusiast who will actually use the extra durability and battery life.
Verdict
The Ultra 3 is the best smartwatch available, period. But "best" does not always mean "right for you." If your needs are notifications, fitness tracking, and basic health monitoring, the Series 11 delivers the same core experience at half the price. The Ultra 3 earns its premium for users who push their watches into extreme conditions.
