Phone cases are the first line of defense against the inevitable drops that plague smartphone ownership. In our 2026 drop test, we subjected 12 popular cases to systematic falls from 6 feet onto three different surfaces: concrete sidewalk, ceramic tile, and asphalt parking lot. Each case was tested with an iPhone 16 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, using high-speed cameras to capture impact dynamics. The Spigen Tough Armor consistently protected both phones across all surfaces, with zero screen damage and minimal corner scuffing. The Otterbox Defender Pro lived up to its reputation with multi-layer shock absorption, though its bulk may not suit everyone. Budget picks like the ESR HaloLock surprised us with adequate protection at a fraction of the price. We rated each case on screen protection, corner damage, camera lens survival, and overall structural integrity after 10 drops per surface type.
