The State of Foldables in 2026
Five years after the first consumer foldable phones launched, the category has matured from novelty to genuine daily driver — for some users. But some users is the operative phrase. After living with five current-generation foldables for a month each, we can tell you exactly who should buy one and who should wait.
Durability: The Crease Question
Every foldable still has a visible crease. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 minimizes it with a redesigned hinge that creates a wider, shallower fold line. OPPO Find N5 uses a waterdrop hinge that nearly eliminates the crease visually but creates a more pronounced bump when folded. In practice, you stop noticing the crease after two days of use — your brain adapts.
The real durability concern is the inner screen coating. All five phones we tested developed micro-scratches within three weeks of normal use. Samsung Ultra Thin Glass 3.0 is the most scratch-resistant, but it is still far softer than regular smartphone glass. A screen protector is mandatory, not optional.
Software: Where Foldables Shine or Struggle
Samsung leads foldable software optimization by a wide margin. Taskbar multitasking, app continuity (seamless transition between cover and inner screens), and Flex Mode (using the fold angle for camera and video calls) are genuinely useful. Google Pixel Fold 2 runs stock Android with decent but limited foldable optimizations. Chinese brands offer innovative features like split-screen shortcuts but suffer from inconsistent third-party app support.
Battery Life Reality
Foldable phones have two screens drawing power, and battery life reflects this. Expect 4-5 hours of screen-on time with the inner display active — roughly 30 percent less than a comparable slab phone. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 lasted our full workday with the cover screen and required an evening charge when using the inner screen heavily. OPPO Find N5 with its 5,500mAh battery is the category leader, comfortably lasting a full day.
Camera Quality Gap
This remains the biggest trade-off. Foldable phones use thinner camera modules to maintain their folding mechanism, which means smaller sensors. Galaxy Z Fold 7 cameras are equivalent to a mid-range slab phone — good in daylight, mediocre in low light. Pixel Fold 2 is the exception, with a flagship-class main sensor that produces excellent images. If camera quality is your top priority, a foldable is not the right choice.
