Smart Lock Buying Guide: Security First

Smart Lock Security Is Not Optional

A smart lock is first a lock, then smart. We partnered with a locksmith evaluating physical security alongside smart features over three months on a test door.

1. Schlage Encode Plus (2nd Gen)

ANSI Grade 1 — highest residential grade. One-inch deadbolt. Resists drilling over 5 minutes. Home Key via iPhone/Apple Watch tap. Built-in WiFi, no hub. 8 months on 4 AA.

  • Security: ANSI Grade 1
  • Platforms: Home Key, Google, Alexa
  • WiFi + Bluetooth
  • Price: $279

2. Yale Assure Lock 3

Touchscreen, ANSI Grade 2. PIN, app, fingerprint (new gen 3), physical key backup. Slim profile fits more doors.

3. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (5th Gen)

Retrofit design for renters: interior installation, no exterior replacement. 5th gen adds WiFi, faster auto-unlock. DoorSense confirms closure before locking.

4. Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro WiFi

Most unlock methods: fingerprint, PIN, phone, key, shake, QR codes. Built-in WiFi. Bolt throw only 0.75 inch vs recommended 1 inch — more kick-in vulnerable.

5. Level Lock+ — Critical Flaw

Beautiful invisible design. But Bluetooth exploitable via BLE packet replay to unlock without authentication. Reported to Level, firmware fix pending. Cannot recommend until patched.

6. Eufy Smart Lock Touch — Battery Issue

Good value but rapid drain below 40F. Dropped 80% to 15% in two cold weeks, causing lockout. External battery pack recommended in cold climates.

Security Rankings (1-10)

Schlage (10), Yale (8), August (6-10), Eufy (7), Ultraloq (6), Level (7 pending fix).

Our Recommendation

Homeowners: Schlage Encode Plus 2nd Gen. Renters: August 5th Gen. Avoid Level Lock+ until BLE vulnerability patched.
