WiFi 7 Mesh Systems: Worth the Upgrade?

WiFi 7 Mesh Systems: Worth the Upgrade?

WiFi 7: What's Actually New

WiFi 7 (802.11be) introduces 320MHz channels, 4K QAM modulation, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO) that simultaneously uses multiple bands. In theory, it's 4.8x faster than WiFi 6. In practice, the benefits depend on your devices and home layout.

Testing Setup

We installed 4 mesh systems in a 3,200 sq ft two-story home and measured throughput at 15 locations using WiFi 7 clients (Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, Intel BE200 laptop card). We also tested with WiFi 6E and WiFi 6 devices to assess backward compatibility.

Results: ASUS ZenWiFi BT10 ($699, 3-pack)

Fastest WiFi 7 speeds we measured: 2.1 Gbps at 10 feet from the primary node, 890 Mbps at the farthest point (45 feet through two walls). MLO delivered consistent low latency (8ms average) even during heavy downloads. Coverage was complete across all 15 test points with no dead zones.

Slightly slower peak speeds (1.8 Gbps) but better value. The tri-band design dedicates one 6GHz band for backhaul, preserving client bandwidth. Setup was the simplest of all systems tested—under 5 minutes from unboxing to connected.

Is WiFi 7 Worth It?

If your devices are WiFi 6 or 6E, you won't see meaningful speed improvements from a WiFi 7 router. The upgrade makes sense when you have WiFi 7 devices or plan to keep the mesh system for 4+ years. For most homes, a well-placed WiFi 6E mesh system delivers 90% of the experience at 60% of the cost.
