Matter in 2026: Promise vs Reality
Matter promised: buy any device, use any platform, no cloud dependency. Two years later, we tested 30 certified devices across HomeKit, Google Home, and Alexa to find what genuinely works.
What Works Well
Lighting: Matter over Thread pairs in under 30 seconds on all platforms, responds instantly, works offline. 12 products tested, all flawless.
Sensors: Motion, door/window, temperature via Thread are reliable. Eve Motion, Aqara P2, SwitchBot all exceeded one year battery life.
Plugs: Simple enough that cross-platform just works. Six brands tested, all reliable.
What Still Struggles
Cameras: Features vary between platforms for same camera. HomeKit Secure Video not replicated on Google/Amazon via Matter.
Locks: Basic lock/unlock works but guest codes and activity logs need manufacturer app. Three of five had delayed status updates.
Thermostats: Only two available. Basic control works but advanced scheduling needs native integration.
Thread vs Wi-Fi
Thread: self-healing mesh for sensors, bulbs, switches. Wi-Fi: bandwidth-heavy devices. Thread needs border router (Apple TV, HomePod, Nest Hub, Echo 4th gen).
