What Matter Promised
Matter launched in late 2022 with the promise that any smart home device would work with any platform - Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings. Three years later, the reality is mixed but improving.
What Works Well
Lighting, plugs, and sensors have excellent Matter support. Brands like Nanoleaf, Eve, and Aqara ship Matter-native devices that pair instantly across platforms. Thread-based devices benefit from the mesh network's reliability and low latency.
What Still Falls Short
Cameras, locks, and robot vacuums lag behind in Matter adoption. Many manufacturers keep advanced features exclusive to their own apps. A Matter-compatible camera might stream video to Apple Home but only record clips in the manufacturer's app.
The Bridge Problem
Most existing smart home devices connect through Matter bridges (Philips Hue Bridge, Aqara Hub) rather than native Matter support. Bridges work, but add complexity and can introduce latency. Native Matter devices are still the minority.
Platform Differences
- Apple Home: Best Matter implementation. Fast, reliable, with excellent automations.
- Google Home: Improved significantly in 2026. Automation editor still clunky.
- Amazon Alexa: Most compatible devices but inconsistent response times.
- Samsung SmartThings: Good hub support, limited automation complexity.
The Verdict
Matter has made buying new smart home devices less stressful. You no longer need to check compatibility charts before purchasing. But the dream of a fully unified smart home is still a few years away. Buy Matter-native when possible, but don't rush to replace working devices.
