The Problem Matter Solves
Smart home fragmentation has been the single biggest barrier to adoption for the past decade. Matter, the connectivity standard launched by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), aims to eliminate this friction entirely.
As of late 2026, Matter has reached version 1.4 with over 2,800 certified devices.
How Matter Works Under the Hood
- Local-first communication: Matter devices communicate directly over your local network using Thread or WiFi. Commands don't round-trip through cloud servers.
- Multi-admin capability: A single Matter device can be controlled simultaneously by Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings.
- Standardized device types: Matter defines exactly how a smart lock, light bulb, or thermostat should behave at the protocol level.
Thread vs WiFi
Thread is a low-power mesh networking protocol for IoT devices. Each Thread device can relay messages for others, creating a self-healing mesh. WiFi is used for higher-bandwidth Matter devices like cameras and smart displays.
Device Categories with Strong Matter Support
- Lighting (excellent): Philips Hue, Nanoleaf, Govee, and WiZ
- Switches and plugs (excellent): Eve, Aqara, and Meross
- Sensors (good): Motion, temperature, humidity from Aqara, Eve, Third Reality
- Thermostats (good): Ecobee and Google Nest
- Locks (growing): Yale, Schlage, and Aqara
Should You Migrate Now?
If building from scratch, Matter-first is the right strategy. If you have an existing setup that works well, adopt Matter for new purchases going forward.
