Matter was supposed to end the smart home compatibility wars — one protocol that works across Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. After two years and testing 30+ Matter-certified devices, here's the honest truth about where things stand.
What Works Well
Basic device categories — lights, plugs, sensors, and locks — work reliably across ecosystems. A Matter-certified light bulb pairs equally well with an iPhone, Android phone, or Echo device. Setup is genuinely simpler than the old hub-per-brand model.
What Still Breaks
Complex devices like cameras, robot vacuums, and multi-function appliances still rely heavily on manufacturer apps for full functionality. Matter handles the basics (on/off, status) but advanced features (scheduling, scenes, automations) often require the native app.
Ecosystem Differences
Apple HomeKit implements Matter most completely, with fast response times and reliable automations. Google Home has improved significantly but occasionally drops devices after updates. Amazon Alexa is the most inconsistent — some Matter devices work perfectly, others require troubleshooting.
Thread vs. Wi-Fi
Matter devices using Thread (a mesh networking protocol) are more reliable than Wi-Fi-based Matter devices. If you're buying new, prioritize Thread-enabled devices and invest in a Thread border router.
