Two AMD Flagships, Two Purposes
AMD's Ryzen 9000 series offers two top-tier chips with very different strengths. The 9800X3D targets gamers; the 9950X targets creators.
Gaming Benchmarks (1080p)
- Cyberpunk 2077: 9800X3D 148fps vs 9950X 127fps (+17%)
- Counter-Strike 2: 9800X3D 612fps vs 9950X 534fps (+15%)
- Starfield: 9800X3D 95fps vs 9950X 82fps (+16%)
- Fortnite: 9800X3D 380fps vs 9950X 345fps (+10%)
Why 3D V-Cache Wins at Gaming
The 9800X3D stacks 96MB of L3 cache directly on the CPU die, totaling 128MB. This eliminates cache misses that force trips to slower RAM, which is crucial for game engines with unpredictable memory access patterns.
Where 9950X Wins
Multi-threaded workloads: video editing (30% faster), 3D rendering (40% faster), and compilation (25% faster). If you game and create, the 9950X is more versatile.
Recommendation
Pure gaming: 9800X3D wins by 10-17%. Mixed use: 9950X is the better all-rounder at similar price.
