External GPUs have entered a new era with Thunderbolt 5 offering 120Gbps bidirectional bandwidth, dramatically reducing the performance penalty versus desktop installations. We tested six eGPU enclosures — three Thunderbolt 5 and three OCuLink — paired with both NVIDIA RTX 5070 and AMD RX 9070 XT graphics cards. Gaming performance was measured at 1440p and 4K across 20 titles, with results compared against the same cards in desktop PCIe x16 slots. The Razer Core X over Thunderbolt 5 delivered an impressive 92% of desktop performance at 1440p, with only minor frame-time spikes in GPU-heavy titles. The Minisforum DEG1 OCuLink dock achieved 95% efficiency thanks to its direct PCIe connection, though it requires a laptop with an OCuLink port. For laptop users wanting desktop-class gaming without the performance tax, Thunderbolt 5 eGPUs are finally a viable solution.
