Living With Both Handhelds
Benchmarks tell you how fast a device runs. They don't tell you how it feels to use every day. We carried the Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally X as our primary gaming devices for 30 days each, tracking everything from boot times to hand cramps.
Ergonomics and Comfort
The Steam Deck's larger grips and wider form factor are more comfortable for extended sessions (2+ hours). The ROG Ally X is lighter and more compact, making it easier to carry but less comfortable for long play sessions. Both cause hand fatigue after 3+ hours.
Software Experience
SteamOS is a console-like experience: press the power button, your game resumes exactly where you left off. Windows on the Ally X requires more management — updates, driver issues, and the constant friction of a desktop OS on a small screen.
Sleep/Resume
This is the Steam Deck's killer feature. Suspend and resume works flawlessly 95% of the time. The Ally X's Windows sleep is unreliable — games crash, audio glitches, and you often need to restart entirely.
Game Compatibility
The Ally X wins here: every PC game works (Game Pass, Epic, GOG, etc.). The Steam Deck covers most of Steam's library via Proton, but multiplayer games with anti-cheat (Fortnite, Valorant) won't run.
Verdict After 30 Days
The Steam Deck OLED is the better daily driver for Steam gamers who value simplicity and battery life. The ROG Ally X is for power users who need Windows compatibility and don't mind the extra management overhead.
