Handheld PC Gaming's Top Contenders
The Steam Deck OLED and ASUS ROG Ally X represent two approaches to handheld PC gaming. Valve optimizes for Steam integration and battery life while ASUS prioritizes raw performance and Windows flexibility. We tested both across 30 games.
Performance Across 30 Games
At native resolution with comparable settings:
- AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring: Ally X averages 15-20% higher FPS
- Indie titles like Hades II and Hollow Knight: Both run flawlessly at 60fps+
- Emulation of Switch and PS2: Ally X handles higher-resolution upscaling
- Steam-specific Proton titles: Steam Deck has better compatibility
Display Quality
The Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch 1280x800 HDR OLED is gorgeous. True blacks, infinite contrast, and vivid colors make every game look better than it has any right to on a handheld. The Ally X's 7-inch 1080p IPS is sharp and bright at 500 nits, but the contrast ratio cannot match OLED.
Battery Life
This is where the Steam Deck OLED dominates:
- Indie games: Steam Deck 8-10 hours, Ally X 4-5 hours
- AA games: Steam Deck 5-7 hours, Ally X 3-4 hours
- AAA games: Steam Deck 2.5-3.5 hours, Ally X 1.5-2.5 hours
Software Experience
SteamOS on the Deck is seamless with boot to game in 15 seconds. Windows on the Ally X gives access to Game Pass, Epic Games Store, and mods but requires more setup.
Verdict
Steam Deck OLED wins on battery life, display quality, and ease of use. ROG Ally X wins on raw performance, Windows flexibility, and Game Pass access.
