Handheld Gaming Showdown
Valve Steam Deck OLED and ASUS ROG Ally X represent two philosophies in handheld gaming. We compared 30 games across both devices, measuring FPS, thermals, battery life, and display quality.
Display Comparison
Steam Deck OLED: 7.4-inch 1280x800 HDR OLED, 90Hz. Perfect blacks and infinite contrast. ROG Ally X: 7-inch 1920x1080 IPS, 120Hz. Higher resolution but no HDR. For visual fidelity, the OLED wins despite lower resolution.
Performance Benchmarks
AAA Games at Native Resolution
Cyberpunk 2077 (medium, 800p): Steam Deck averaged 40fps, Ally X hit 52fps at 1080p. Elden Ring: Deck held 35fps, Ally X reached 48fps. The Ally X AMD Z1 Extreme has a raw power advantage.
Indie and Older Titles
Hades 2, Hollow Knight, and Stardew Valley ran flawlessly on both. Here the Steam Deck OLED display makes these games look stunning.
Battery Life
Steam Deck OLED: 50Wh battery, 4-8 hours depending on game intensity. ROG Ally X: 80Wh battery, 5-10 hours. The Ally X larger battery offsets its more power-hungry chip.
Software Experience
SteamOS is purpose-built for handheld gaming. Windows on Ally X is more versatile but less polished. Game Pass library access on Ally X is a major advantage for subscription gamers.
Verdict
Steam Deck OLED for display quality and ease of use. ROG Ally X for raw performance and game library breadth. Both are excellent—your choice depends on priorities.
