Advanced Ray Tracing on Console
PlayStation 5 Pro introduces an enhanced GPU with dedicated ray tracing hardware that Sony claims is 2-3x faster than the base PS5. We benchmarked 10 games to measure the actual RT improvement.
Test Setup
All tests run on PS5 Pro with latest firmware, connected to a 4K 120Hz OLED display. Frame rates captured via HDMI capture card for accuracy.
Game Benchmarks
Spider-Man 2
RT reflections at 4K/60fps with no visible degradation. Window reflections show accurate city geometry. Massive improvement over PS5 base which drops to 30fps with RT on.
Horizon Forbidden West
RT shadows in forest environments maintain 60fps stable. Leaf shadows are individually traced, creating natural dappled light patterns. No RT on base PS5.
Gran Turismo 7
Full RT global illumination in replays and showroom. Car paint reflections show environment details accurately. 4K/60fps locked in-race with selective RT.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
RT reflections and shadows simultaneously at 4K/60fps. Portals show RT-lit environments on both sides. Previously impossible on base hardware.
Power Consumption
RT workloads push the PS5 Pro to 220W peak. Still quieter than a gaming PC delivering equivalent performance. Fan noise barely audible from couch distance.
Verdict
PS5 Pro delivers meaningful RT improvements across all tested titles. For players who value visual fidelity, the upgrade is justified.
