The Handheld PC Market in 2026
Three years after the Steam Deck changed the game, handheld gaming PCs have matured into serious portable gaming machines. Here's how the big three stack up in late 2026.
Performance Benchmarks
We tested Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, and Elden Ring at native resolution with medium presets:
- ROG Ally X (Z1 Extreme): Cyberpunk 45fps, BG3 52fps, Elden Ring 55fps
- Legion Go (Z1 Extreme): Cyberpunk 42fps, BG3 49fps, Elden Ring 53fps
- Steam Deck OLED (Custom AMD): Cyberpunk 38fps, BG3 44fps, Elden Ring 48fps
Display Quality
The Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch HDR OLED remains the display king with perfect blacks and vibrant colors. The ROG Ally X uses a 7-inch 120Hz IPS that's bright but lacks contrast. Legion Go's 8.8-inch 144Hz display is the largest but adds bulk.
Battery Life (Gaming)
- Steam Deck OLED: 3-5 hours (AAA), 8-10 hours (indie)
- ROG Ally X: 2.5-4 hours (AAA), 7-9 hours (indie)
- Legion Go: 2-3.5 hours (AAA), 6-8 hours (indie)
Software Experience
SteamOS on the Deck offers the most polished experience with seamless suspend/resume and optimized game profiles. Windows-based Ally X and Legion Go give you access to Game Pass and Epic Games Store but at the cost of a clunkier interface.
Verdict
Steam Deck OLED wins for pure Steam gaming with the best battery and display. ROG Ally X offers the best raw performance and Windows flexibility. Legion Go suits players who want the biggest screen and don't mind the weight.
