Handheld Gaming PCs: 4 Models Compared

The Handheld PC Market in 2026

Four major handheld gaming PCs compete for the portable gaming crown. We tested each for 2 weeks, playing AAA titles, indie games, and emulated classics to evaluate performance, battery life, ergonomics, and software experience.

Steam Deck OLED ($549)

The best software experience thanks to SteamOS's console-like interface. The 7.4-inch OLED display is gorgeous with perfect blacks and vibrant colors. Battery life is the best in class: 4-8 hours depending on game intensity. The limitation is the AMD APU—older titles run great, but 2026 AAA releases require significant settings compromises at native 800p resolution.

ASUS ROG Ally X ($799)

The most powerful handheld with AMD Z1 Extreme and 24GB RAM. Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 45 FPS on medium settings at 1080p—a feat the Steam Deck can't match. The 7-inch 120Hz display is sharp but IPS (not OLED). Battery life averages 2.5-4 hours for AAA games. The new ergonomic grips are significantly more comfortable than the original Ally.

Lenovo Legion Go ($699)

The 8.8-inch 144Hz display is the largest and fastest in the group. Detachable controllers add versatility for tabletop multiplayer. Performance matches the Ally X. The tradeoff is size and weight—at 854g, it's noticeably heavier during extended play sessions.

Best for Different Users

Steam Deck OLED for budget-conscious gamers who play indie and older titles. ROG Ally X for maximum performance on AAA games. Legion Go for those who prioritize screen size. All three are excellent—the choice depends on your game library and portability preferences.
