Gaming Monitor Refresh Rate: What Matters

Gaming Monitor Refresh Rate: What Matters

Refresh Rate Explained

Refresh rate (Hz) measures how many times per second the monitor updates its image. Higher rates produce smoother motion and lower input lag. But the returns diminish rapidly.

The Diminishing Returns Curve

60Hz to 144Hz: Night and Day

The jump is immediately obvious. Motion becomes smoother, and you can track moving targets more easily. Input lag drops from 16.7ms to 6.9ms. This is the biggest upgrade you can make.

144Hz to 240Hz: Subtle but Real

The improvement is measurable but harder to perceive. Competitive players report better tracking in fast-paced games. Casual players may not notice.

240Hz to 360Hz+: Competitive Only

Only meaningful for professional esports players. The visual difference is minimal.

GPU Requirements

  • 144Hz at 1080p: RTX 4060 / RX 7600 minimum
  • 240Hz at 1080p: RTX 4070 Ti / RX 7800 XT
  • 360Hz at 1440p: RTX 4090 / RX 7900 XTX

Our Recommendation

For most gamers, 144Hz OLED at 1440p is the sweet spot. Competitive FPS players should prioritize 240Hz+ at 1080p.
