Budget VR Has Never Been Better
The VR headset market has matured enough that excellent experiences are available well under the flagship price point. We tested five headsets priced at $300 or less to find the best value.
1. Meta Quest 3S — $299 (Best Overall)
The Quest 3S delivers the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset as the pricier Quest 3 but with Fresnel lenses instead of pancake optics. Resolution is 1832×1920 per eye, tracking is flawless, and the game library includes 500+ titles.
Display Comparison
Fresnel lenses mean slightly bulkier form factor and visible god rays in dark scenes, but color accuracy and brightness match the Quest 3 at 95% of the level.
2. Pico 4 Ultra — $279
Strong hardware with pancake lenses at a lower price than Quest. The catch: limited game library outside Asia. If you primarily play PCVR via streaming, this is a strong pick.
3. HP Reverb G2 (2025 restock) — $249
Still one of the best displays in any VR headset at 2160×2160 per eye. Windows Mixed Reality support is limited but SteamVR works perfectly. No standalone capability.
4. Lynx R-1 — $199
An open-source mixed reality headset with passthrough cameras. Build quality is rough compared to Meta, but the open ecosystem appeals to developers and tinkerers.
5. NOLO Sonic 2 — $179
The cheapest option with inside-out tracking. Display quality is noticeably lower (720p per eye), but for casual VR gaming and fitness apps, it gets the job done.
Our Recommendation
The Quest 3S at $299 offers 90% of the flagship experience at 60% of the price. Unless you specifically need PC-only or open-source platforms, it's the clear winner.
