Getting Your Turntable Right From Day One
A poorly set up turntable sounds worse than a $20 Bluetooth speaker. Proper setup takes 30 minutes and dramatically improves both sound quality and record longevity.
Mistake 1: Skipping the Level Check
Your turntable must sit perfectly level. Even a 2-degree tilt causes the stylus to track unevenly, wearing one groove wall more than the other.
Mistake 2: Wrong Tracking Force
Too light and the stylus skates across grooves, causing distortion. Too heavy and you accelerate record wear. Always use a digital stylus scale.
Cartridge Alignment
Proper alignment ensures the stylus sits tangent to the groove. Use a two-point alignment protractor.
- Loosen the cartridge screws just enough to allow sliding
- Align to the inner null point first, then check the outer
- Iterate between both points until the cartridge body is parallel
- Tighten screws gently while holding the cartridge in position
Mistake 3: Ignoring Anti-Skate
Set anti-skate to match your tracking force. Without it, the arm pulls toward the center, increasing wear on inner grooves.
Phono Stage: Built-in vs External
Budget turntables include a built-in phono preamp, adequate for casual listening. For serious audiophile use, an external phono stage ($100-300) reduces noise floor significantly.
