How We Tested Noise Cancellation
We tested eight ANC headphones in three environments: airplane cabin (75dB), coffee shop (65dB), subway platform (80dB). Calibrated microphones measured actual noise reduction across the frequency spectrum.
1. Sony WH-1000XM6
Deepest ANC ever measured: 38dB at 200Hz, 28dB at 1kHz, 22dB at 4kHz. V3 processor adapts 50% faster. Warm engaging sound with 10-band EQ.
- ANC: 38dB at 200Hz (best)
- Battery: 32h with ANC
- Weight: 248g
- Codecs: LDAC, AAC, SBC, LC3
2. Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2
4dB better speech suppression than Sony in coffee shops. Immersive Audio creates spatial soundstage. Class-leading comfort with plush cushions.
3. Apple AirPods Max 2
USB-C, lossless Bluetooth, H3 chip processes 48,000 times/second. Transparency mode nearly identical to wearing nothing. Premium build but 398g causes fatigue.
4. Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless
Most accurate detailed sound: reference-grade tuning. ANC 3-5dB less than Sony/Bose. If fidelity is priority, this is the pair.
5. Technics EAH-AZ100
Audiophile debut with LDAC plus aptX Lossless. Unique analog mode bypasses DSP. At $499, most expensive here.
Comfort After 4 Hours (1-10)
Bose QC Ultra 2 (9.2), Sony XM6 (8.8), Sennheiser Momentum 5 (8.5), Technics AZ100 (7.9), AirPods Max 2 (6.5).
Our Verdict
Sony WH-1000XM6 for most users. Audiophiles: Sennheiser Momentum 5 or Technics AZ100. Comfort-first: Bose QC Ultra 2.
